The groundswell is here wahey!!! A proper sized one in the half-mast to
logo range i.e. undoubtedly the biggest waves I have ever sailed. Huge
fast-moving swells out back (too fast to keep up with when fully planing)
that turned into way cleaner longer waves than yesterday with big gaps
between the sets. And less windy - perfect 5,2 weather all day - sooo much
better than maxed teeth-chattering 4.0 crazy-ness.
I had 4 sessions between 10.30am-2pm that were interspersed with
photo-taking breaks on the beach. The first two sessions weren't all that
great. It was too busy to be enjoyable and although I got a few waves they
weren't packing much of a punch over the high tide period. But this all
changed for session 3. With the tide now backing off the waves really
started to ramp up and soon I was taking the drop down some real whoppers.
I scored a couple of superb rides with full power bottom turns into the
flats and then I got a proper taste of the punishment that Moulay can dish
out. I was chucked off when dropping in a fraction too late on one of the
biggest sets of the day which then decided to close out with full force
right on top of me. Oh sh*t. I couldn't keep hold of my kit and was tossed
around like a rag doll fearing that at any moment I would cop a face full
of board/mast/boom/fin. Not pleasant. Eventually I popped up expecting a
long swim after my kit but incredibly it was right there in front of me and
fully intact!!! Without enough time or wind to waterstart I had to suffer
the rinsings from the remaining waves of the set (one of which pummeled me
so much that I was completely disorientated as to the location of
beach/sky/water when I surfaced), and I then sailed back to the beach,
thanking my lucky stars that me and my kit had survived unscathed. Which
was so lucky considering that was by a fair margin my biggest windsurfing
wipeout ever.
After that spanking I was slightly reluctant to go out again but the sight
of Colin, Rod and Steve tucking in to wave after wave of dtl joy meant I
could not resist one more session before the tide dropped too far back off
the reef to make launching and landing comfortable. The wind had really
picked up now but the fully downhauled 5.2 coped admirably. More great
rides, one on pretty much every run in, proper proper good. Until half-way
down a wave that I had stalked from way out back and then timed to
perfection (taking off earlier to scoot pass the close-out section) I was
f*ck*d over by a local Moroccan kid who fully dropped in on me and forced
me off the wave into the flats and onto the very shallow downwind section
of the reef. ARRRRGGGHHH. So frustrating as that was my best wave of the
day. I had words with him on the beach later and I think he got the message
- he won't be doing that again.
What a sail.
